MARYLAND DENTAL SOCIETY EMBRACES
COLLEAGUE’S EFFORTS TO GAIN JUSTICE

Organization vows to mobilize members and heighten focus on murder trial of police officers indicted in brother’s vicious slaying.

Baltimore, Md., Monday, 5 February 2007- Dr. Leslie E. Grant, 2006 National Dental Association (NDA) President and Maryland Dental Society (MDS) member, released a statement hours after the breech of the New Orleans levees advising members to look for and reach out to their classmates and fellow NDA members. She also recommended supporting the efforts of the Red Cross by donating blood, blankets and nonperishable food. True to the organization’s mission, it was the compassion of the leadership and members alike, to try and do their part to help colleagues displaced by the hurricane and to support the still struggling New Orleans commerce.

Soon after the devastating events of Hurricane Katrina, the NDA agreed to convene their 2007 mid-winter meeting in the storm-torn, crescent city. While their welcome to the Big Easy was in the warm spirit of New Orleans, the first meeting day ended with a numbing and acutely painful account of the ultimate civil rights injustice, cold-blooded murder. NDA Past President and Louisiana native, Dr. Romell Madison, glaringly recalled for colleagues the events leading to the death of his mentally handicapped brother, Ronald Madison, telling how New Orleans police viciously gunned him down in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina on September 4, 2005.

The Maryland Dental Society is calling for state legislators throughout Maryland and the country to require the New Orleans government to uphold the evidence and insist that the indicted officers be held to the same standards for any citizen scheduled to go to trial for first-degree murder, including:

  1. Reversal of the Civil Service Board’s decision allowing the officers to return to work
  2. Have the officers jailed without bond
  3. Encourage a favorable first-degree murder conviction by the district attorney

Shot seven times in the back, the execution style murder of Ronald Madison has deeply penetrated the emotional fiber of the MDS and NDA family. Dr. Romell Madison, a graduate of Meharry Medical College, attended dental school with some members of the MDS. A component of the NDA, the MDS is pleased that the organizations general counsel has drafted a “Resolution   on Behalf of Justice for Ronald Madison.” The document can be download from the NDA website at www.ndaonline.org.
